Affliction

4 pm.
It was a rather mild afternoon. Light breezes came and went, cooling the rooms inside the modest house. She was sweeping the kitchen while humming her favorite song. The hem of her green daster waved a little in every step she took. She was alone for her children were out playing with the neighborhood and her husband had yet to come home. As the bushy sweep brushed the ceramic floor, she began to reflect, to contemplate her life.
She remembered clearly the day her husband first timidly asked her to go out. She remembered clearly the day they vowed to love and care for each other till the death do them part like it was yesterday. She remembered the nights her husband caressed her cheek ever so lovingly, eyes glued to her as if she was an alluring star. She tried to clutch those fine memories dearly from the day they first met, but little by little, they lost the power to keep their love intact and just slipped through her fingers. Those sweet, soft caresses and longing eyes were long gone. And it didn't help her that her husband had started keeping secrets from her. And that she learned of her husband who had been seeing another woman secretly for the last year and a half. And her heart was shattered until there was nothing left. There was love, then naught.
She slowly moved to sweep the living room where the old television was kept on to keep her company. She stopped for a while and fixed her focus on the television screen. The daily celebrity gossip program disclosed a piece of news about a popular actress who issued a divorce towards her allegedly cheating husband. She had thought of doing the same. She despised her husband so much that every time she saw his face, nothing but rage and stinging pain formed and burned her so. Every day, she was restless and was fueled with every negative emotion known to man, and every night, she could not sleep soundly that she vowed herself to divorce him the next morning. But she never did. It was her son and daughter -- the thought of her children ceased her from severing the marital tie that tortured and suffocated her so.
Unconsciously, her vision began to blur as tears emerged. Her hands reflexively wiped them off her face, and she put up a thin smile. She continued her halted work, and the television was deliberately kept on. She told herself, for the fifth time that day, that she was strong. She told herself that as long as her beloved children were happy, so was she. Yes, as long as they were there beside her, she could overcome every heartbreak and heartless betrayal.
